Green Power Overview

Green Power, for middle-schoolers, is our flagship educational program for students interested in learning about agriculture, forestry and local ecology while working alongside Land’s Sake farm and education staff. In addition to being a great learning opportunity, Green Power teaches the value of meaningful work by paying students a weekly stipend, funded in part by the Town of Weston.

In the summer, fall, and spring, Green Power kids work in their own garden at Land's Sake farm growing vegetables for local area food banks. In the winter, students work in our forestry program and learn the process of small-batch maple sugar production. All of our programs include natural history lessons, health and wellness exercises, and plenty of engaging nature games. These activities serve to raise students' awareness of ecology and the concept of sustainability. We study the science of the living world, and introduce sustainability as a framework for making decisions about the use of our natural resources. The Green Power experience contributes to a life-long love of nature, learning, and investing in one's community.

Junior Apprenticeship Program (JA)

  • Summer 2010: Jun. 28 - Aug. 27; 1-4:30pm
  • Winter 2010: Jan. 9-Apr. 17; every other Sat. from 9am-4pm

Summer apprenticeships give participants a solid foundation in the land stewardship, farming and educational components of Land’s Sake. Through a varied schedule, participants can expect to help maintain the Weston trail system, increase their knowledge of organic farming and help educate youth about the importance of healthy communities under the guidance of Land’s Sake staff. For this program, participants must undergo an application and interview process in order to be fully accepted into the program. Register here

Winter apprenticeships are geared toward students interested in sustainable woodlot and orchard management, traditional maple syrup operations, environmental education, or those who just couldn't get enough of Green Power. During the winter session, participants will work and learn alongside Land's Sake staff in the Highland Street forest, the Concord Road orchard and the Bill McElwain Sugar House.
