Firewood Harvesting

  • Each winter, Land's Sake farmers work in forests on Weston Conservation land, harvesting trees marked by the Weston Conservation Commission to be sold as firewood to local residents. This collaboration with the Conservation Commission reflects Land's Sake's mission to connect people to the land and inspire the responsible woodland stewardship.
  • Marked trees are typically older or less healthy, leaving the majority of the forest intact and minimizing disruption - this allows for better wildlife habitat preservation, soil protection, and water quality. Winter is the best time for harvesting wood, as trees are dormant and frozen ground minimizes soil compaction from heavy machinery. Land's Sake's farm crew is trained and skilled at felling trees, skidding logs, and bucking, splitting, and stacking the wood that becomes next winter's firewood.
  • Land's Sake also taps approximately 400 sugar maple trees each winter, and produces our own maple syrup with the help of volunteers and students in our After-School Maple program. Through this program, we engage students of Weston with Town woods, creating a new appreciation for this precious and protected resource.
