Farm-scale Composting

New in 2025: Farm-Scale Composting!

Thanks to many generous donors, we reached our 2025 fundraising goal, and implemented a new aerated static pile composting system at Land's Sake. Site work completed in late summer 2025, and we began compost production in October. The farm team looks forward to a steady supply of nutrient-rich compost to enrich the quality and quantity of Land's Sake produce. Thank you for supporting sustainable and environmentally responsible farming!

Compost generated by this agricultural system will be used exclusively by Land’s Sake to feed the farm’s fields. High quality compost can be transformational to a field of vegetables! Establishing this facility on-site will allow Land’s Sake to recycle farm waste, and create potential opportunities to accept waste from the community. Local landscapers, CSA sharers, and others have expressed interest in contributing to a compost operation.

Aerated static pile (ASP) composting

  • Aeration: Air is forced through the pile using a system of pipes and blowers, ensuring adequate oxygen for aerobic decomposition.
  • No Turning: Unlike traditional composting, ASP systems do not require the pile to be manually turned, streamlining the process.
  • Faster Decomposition: The constant supply of air helps to maintain high temperatures and supports microbial activity, leading to faster decomposition.
  • Odor Control: Aerated static piles help to minimize odors by maintaining an aerobic environment, which is less prone to producing foul smells.
